Journal · Game day

Thanksgiving weekend from PDK: the Egg Bowl Friday, the Iron Bowl Saturday, home for leftovers both nights.

Four rivalry games in two days, all under an hour from Atlanta on the Epic. How the weekend works, which airport we use for each, and why these two days book first.

Passengers boarding on the ramp before a game

Thanksgiving weekend is the one weekend a year when the whole Southeast plays at once, and most of it is within an hour of DeKalb-Peachtree. Here is the schedule as the schools have published it, and how each trip runs from PDK.

Friday, November 27: the Egg Bowl at Oxford

Mississippi State at Ole Miss, on Black Friday for the third year running. Oxford is about an hour and five minutes in the air and five and a half hours by car. University-Oxford Airport is five minutes from the Square and the Grove. Leave PDK after a late breakfast, tailgate, watch the game, and be back in Atlanta for leftovers.

Same day, the other direction: Florida at Florida State in Tallahassee, fifty minutes from PDK, with the airport ten minutes from Doak Campbell.

Saturday, November 28: the Iron Bowl at Tuscaloosa

Auburn at Alabama. Tuscaloosa National is forty-five minutes from PDK and ten minutes from Bryant-Denny, and on this particular Saturday the drive through Birmingham is a half-day commitment each way. This is the most requested game on our calendar every year and the airplane is spoken for early; if you want it, call this week.

Also Saturday: South Carolina at Clemson, half an hour from PDK with Oconee County Regional ten minutes from Death Valley; Tennessee at Vanderbilt in Nashville, forty-five minutes; and Louisville at Kentucky in Lexington, about an hour, with the airport across the road from Keeneland.

How the day goes

Five seats, bags, a cooler and the dog. We land at the field next to the stadium, a car meets the airplane, and the crew stays with the airplane through the fourth quarter and the tailgate after. You walk back to the ramp when you are ready and we are home within the hour. One number for the round trip and the wait; kickoff times, which the networks set the week of, do not change the plan.

The whole season, with dates, airports and block times for every stadium the Epic reaches nonstop, is on the game day page. Anchor Card members get first call on the airplane, which on this weekend is the difference.

Flights on the Epic are operated by ParkAir, LLC under FAA Part 135 certificate PRKA774T. Other aircraft are operated by other certificated carriers and arranged by ParkAir, LLC as an air charter broker. Times are typical and depend on weather, winds and availability.
